Según la RAE, quilombo es “de origen africano” y registra dos sentidos rioplatenses: “prostíbulo” (Arg., Ur. y otros) y, en uso vulgar, “lío, barullo, gresca, desorden”.
Ahora, en Argentina de hoy, cuando alguien dice “se armó un quilombo”, casi siempre habla de caos/desorden. El sentido de “prostíbulo” quedó más viejo/lunfardesco y aparece más en textos, historias o registros históricos que en la charla cotidiana. (Que esté en el diccionario no significa que sea el uso más frecuente hoy).
¿De dónde sale? La palabra entra al Río de la Plata vía Brasil: en Brasil quilombo nombró comunidades formadas por personas esclavizadas que escapaban y armaban asentamientos en zonas apartadas. Con el tiempo, para el “orden” colonial esos lugares eran sinónimo de “descontrol”, y ese corrimiento de sentido ayudó a que en Buenos Aires terminara asociándose primero a prostíbulos y después a “lío/desorden” (el significado que quedó vivo).
En resumen: la próxima vez que digas “qué quilombo”, estás usando una palabra con un recorrido histórico pesado: África → Brasil → Río de la Plata → del “lugar” al “caos”.
